Een tijdje geleden zag ik bij ons op het strand deze vreemde wolkenformatie, waar iedereen met verbazing naar stond te kijken.
Zelfs de hier geboren Thais hadden zoiets nog nooit gezien.
Na de foto gemaakt te hebben meteen in de pen geklommen en een mailtje gestuurd naar Harald Edens.
Hij heeft een prachtige website over weerfotografie met foto's van een groot aantal weersverschijnselen en informatie over hoe deze zelf te fotograferen.
Tot mijn grote vreugde kreeg ik een mailtje terug waarin hij het volgende schrijft
"Ik heb je intrigerende foto bekeken en eerlijk gezegd weet ik zelf ook niet goed wat voor dat effect dat patroon maakte.
Ik hou het op een dun cirrostratus wolkendek dat vrijwel doorzichtig is, en op die plaats door windschering wolkrollen maakt.
Je ziet dat soms ook wel met altocumulus (schaapjeswolken) die in banden gerangschikt zijn. Maar dit is maar een gok!"

A while ago I saw these strange clouds. Even the locals never saw these before.
After taking the picture I send an email to Harald Edens. He has a very interesting website about weather photography
with photographs of many weather phenomena and techniques to photograph these.
I was very pleased when I received his answer. This is what he wrote
"I saw your interesting picture but to be honest I'm not sure what effect created these clouds.
I think its a thin cirrostratus layer and the effect has been triggered by windshear. Sometimes you'll see the same effect with altocumulus."

View on Koh Phangan

Koh Phangan is onderdeel van de provincie Suratthani en ligt in de Golf van Thailand.
Koh Phangan is het centrale eiland van de Samui archipel, met afmetingen van circa 15 km van noord tot zuid en 10 km van oost tot west.
Voor veel mensen is Koh Phangan synoniem met de Full Moon Party in Haad Rin, waar elke maand tot 15.000 feestgangers op af komen.

Koh Phangan is part of the Suratthani province and is located in the Gulf of Thailand.
It is the center island of the Samui archipelago, stretching about 15 km north to south and 10 km east to west.
For a lot of people Koh Phangan is synonymous with the world famous Full Moon Party, which attracts up to 15,000 people every month to the island.

Vannacht is het volle maan. Deze foto heb ik gisteravond dus gemaakt, dus officieel geen volle maan.
Door de lange sluitertijd in combinatie met de wind is het geheel wat wazig geworden, maar ik vond 't effect wel leuk.
Ben er nog niet uit wat ik nu precies van de foto vind, dus graag jullie eerlijke mening!
Schiet maar...!!!

Tonight its full moon. I took this picture last night, so officialy not yet full moon.
Because of the long exposure in combination with the wind the picture is a bit blurry, but I think I like the effect.
I'm not sure yet if I like the picture, so I would like to ask your honest opinion.
So shoot...!!!

Het strand van het dorpje Ban Taling Ngam op Koh Samui waar wij wonen. Mocht iemand zich afvragen waarom die mevrouw daar op haar bibs in het water zit, ze is kleine schelpjes aan 't zoeken voor het avondeten. De wazige bergen onder de wolken aan de horizon is het vaste land.

Zonsondergang - Sunset

Eindelijk zijn de wolken weg, die al maandenlang aan de horizon zwerven en kunnen we weer genieten van prachtige zonsondergangen. Deze heb ik net gemaakt.

Finally the clouds are gone that covered the horizon for months so we can enjoy the beautiful sunsets again. I made this pictures today.

Een van de Five Islands hier voor de kust. Op deze eilanden worden de vogelnestjes 'geoogst' die gemaakt zijn van het speeksel van een bepaalde zwaluwsoort. In de winkel kost een kilo zo'n 4.000 dollar!

One of the Five Islands in front of the coast. On these islands they 'harvest' the birdsnest which are made from the saliva of some kind of swallow. In the store you can buy a kilo for about 4.000 US dollars!

Nog een zonsopgang - Another sunrise

Deze zonsopgang is ook genomen vanaf het strand in Khanom. De zon is nog wel niet aanwezig, maar de gekleurde weerspiegeling op het water was wel een foto waard.

This sunrise is also taken from the beach of Khanom. The sun isn't yet vissible, but I thought the multicolour reflection in the sea was worth a picture.

Zonsopgang vanaf het strand in Khanom (vaste land) in Zuid-Thailand. Tijdens onze visarun in september 2006 zijn we een dag in Khanom geweest, omdat de veerboten naar het eiland vol zaten. Extra vroeg opgestaan om ook eens een zonsopgang te kunnen fotograferen. Ondanks al die wolken is het toch nog een zonnige dag geworden.

Sunrise at the beach of Khanom (mainland) in Southern Thailand. During our visarun in september 2006 we have spend a day (and night) in Khanom, because all the ferries to the island were overbooked. I woke up early to be able to make a picure of the sunrise. Despite the many clouds it became another sunny day.
